The Circus Building in Copenhagen is temporarily closing its doors to undergo extensive restoration. Behind the project are the building’s owner, Balder Denmark, and Wallmans, who lease the venue and host dinner shows in the historic space. The goal is to restore the iconic building to its original splendor while updating it to meet modern needs and uses.

Since its construction in 1886, the Circus Building has been a vibrant stage for grand performances and cultural experiences. As of April 1st, the stage lights have dimmed for the last time—at least for now—and over the next five months, construction workers will be the building’s primary guests.

The comprehensive restoration of one of Copenhagen’s most iconic buildings is a passion project for Christian Sunn, CEO of Wallmans and the creative mind behind the initiative.

“The Circus Building is a unique part of Copenhagen’s cultural heritage. The aim is to return it to its former glory—with respect for its architecture and history—while adapting it to the demands and possibilities of today. It should offer guests an even better experience and open up for new activities and opportunities,” says Christian Sunn.

Restoration with respect for history

Balder Denmark, which has owned the Circus Building since 2016, has long intended to carry out a restoration. Alexander Barlow, Head of Project Development at Balder, emphasizes that the building’s protected status places high demands on material choices and craftsmanship.

“As owners, Balder has a responsibility to preserve and future-proof the Circus Building. There are many listed elements making the process complex – but that’s also what makes it exciting.”

Hannah Østergaard, Customer and Marketing Director at Balder, adds:

“The goal is to preserve the authenticity and history while updating the building for future use. It’s no small task, but we bring extensive experience to the table and are working with a talented team, so we’re confident in the project.”

Heritage in a new light

In 1984, world-renowned Danish designer and architect Verner Panton created the Circus Building’s iconic color and lighting design—now being carefully recreated in close collaboration with his daughter, Carin Panton von Halem. The foyer areas will be restored to reflect Panton’s original vision.

“The color and light design played a significant role in the identity of the Circus Building because Panton allowed light and color to interact with the architecture and its function. Through his work, he interpreted the circus theme—and that’s what we aim to return to in the restoration,” explains Signe Baadsgaard, architect and partner at Lundgaard & Tranberg Architects.

The architectural team is focusing on modernizing the exterior and most of the public areas, excluding the domed auditorium. Alexander Barlow elaborates:

“The vestibule, box office, cloakrooms, bars, and restrooms will all be upgraded to meet today’s standards of comfort and quality. Meanwhile, the facade will undergo a significant renovation, including the brickwork and the iconic Alexander frieze encircling the building, all done with great respect for the original expression.”

In addition, several technical systems will be improved, enhancing both ventilation and acoustics.

“This means the Circus Building will not only be more beautiful, but also more functional and operationally reliable,” says Hannah Østergaard.

A tight timeline ahead of reopening

With only five months to complete the restoration, the timeline is tight. But according to Alexander Barlow, the project has been meticulously planned to ensure deadlines are met.

“Ticket sales for the first shows after the reopening are already underway, so careful planning is key to handling any unexpected challenges swiftly and efficiently.”

On August 29th, the Circus Building will reopen, and Christian Sunn looks forward to welcoming the public once again.

“This unique Copenhagen landmark is receiving a major upgrade that beautifully blends historical grandeur with modern comfort and quality. That’s something we can all look forward to.”
